Citizens Bank contributes more than $100,000 to support Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations in Boston

BOSTON (January 13, 2011) - Citizens Bank and the Citizens Bank Foundation announced that it is contributing more than $100,000 to support commemorative events marking Martin Luther King, Jr. Day across the city next Monday, January, 17.

The funds will support three key celebrations in Boston which celebrate the legacy of Dr. King’s goal of promoting justice and equality for all; the 41st MLK Jr. Memorial Scholarship Breakfast, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Open House and the Boston Children’s Chorus’s annual MLK Jr. Tribute Concert.

“We are very pleased to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by supporting these events, which engage families, community, business and civic leaders. We hope that as many people as possible can take part and enjoy the celebrations, marking the birth of such an extraordinary activist,” said Jerry Sargent, President, Citizens Bank, Massachusetts.

Sponsored events kick off with the annual MLK Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Now in its 41st year, it is the nation's longest commemorative breakfast honoring the life and work of Dr. King. More than 1,200 people will attend the 2011 breakfast, co-chaired by the Union United Methodist Church and St. Cyprians Episcopal Church. The funds support student scholarships and community programs. Citizens Bank Foundation has supported scholarships at the breakfast for the past five years.
