Little Sisters of the Poor is western Pa.’s new Champion in Action

Agency receives $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support

PITTSBURGH      (January 10, 2007) - Citizens Bank and WPXI-TV today named Little Sisters of the Poor as its first quarter Champion in Action under the category of elder support. This Brighton Heights organization, which provides health care and support services to the elderly poor, will receive a $25,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation and extensive volunteer and promotional support from Citizens Bank and WPXI-TV.

“Citizens Bank is pleased to join WPXI-TV in naming Little Sisters of the Poor as our newest Champion in Action,” said Ralph J. Papa, president of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania. “Under the leadership of its administrator, Sister Mary Vincent, this tremendous organization provides our seniors with more than a place to receive quality health care. Through a number of innovative and effective programs and services, Little Sisters of the Poor is changing the face of elder care through its dedication to providing exceptional and holistic care for the poor elderly in our community.”

“As an organization committed to the community, WPXI-TV is proud to partner with Citizens Bank to honor Little Sisters of the Poor,” said Ray Carter, WPXI-TV’s general manager. “On behalf of WPXI-TV, I congratulate the leadership, staff and volunteers of Little Sisters of the Poor on this honor and thank them for all they do for the elderly in our community.”

Through Champions in Action, Citizens Bank and WPXI-TV recognize and support non-profit organizations for the contributions these groups make to communities in the Pittsburgh region. A new Champion in Action is selected each quarter among a range of social service areas.

As a Champion in Action, Little Sisters of the Poor receives:

• A $25,000 contribution in unrestricted funds from the Citizens Bank Foundation.
• Media coverage from WPXI-TV, including public service announcements and TV profile.
• Volunteer support from Citizens and WPXI-TV employees.
• Extensive public relations support.
• Promotional support, highlighting the organization in all Citizens Bank branches.
• Exposure on both Citizens Bank and WPXI-TV Web sites.

What makes Little Sisters of the Poor a Champion in Action?  The organization:

• Has served nearly 12,000 in its 134-year history at its Brighton Heights facility, focusing on improving the quality of life for Pittsburgh’s elderly poor.
• Offers independent living, assisted living and nursing care to the elderly poor regardless of their ability to pay or their religious affiliation.
• Provides a host of support services including physical and occupational therapy, social services, nutritious meals and transportation.
• Encourages young people to interact with their residents through a variety of intergenerational programs.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Champion in Action,” said Sister Mary Vincent, administrator of Little Sisters of the Poor. “We commend Citizens Bank and WPXI-TV for the active support these companies provide to non-profit organizations throughout western Pennsylvania. It is particularly encouraging to have them acknowledge that a small organization can have a huge impact on our community. At Little Sisters of the Poor, it’s not enough for us to provide basic care to our elderly neighbors in need. We want to make sure that we give our seniors the tools they need to live out their latter years with the best possible quality of life. With the support we will receive from the Champions in Action program, we will be all the more prepared to reach our goal.“

In addition to Little Sisters of the Poor, the following organizations have been selected as Champions in Action since the program was introduced in 2004: Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, Aliquippa Alliance for Unity and Development, Beginning with Books, The Neighborhood Academy, HEARTH, Human Services Center Corporation, Washington Community Arts and Cultural Center, Rainbow Kitchen Community Services and Sojourner House MOMS.

Next quarter, an organization providing youth programming will be selected. Applications will be accepted through January 19, 2007.
