Citizens Bank and Mass Youth Soccer Association celebrate opening of state-of-the-art soccer complex
Sixteen-field soccer complex first of its kind in New EnglandLancaster, Ma. (September 25, 2007) - Citizens Bank and the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association will hold a grand opening of Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park, a new, state-of-the-art 16-field soccer complex in Lancaster, Mass., on Sunday, September 30.
More than 80 local soccer teams will participate in tournaments on Sunday, with the first match beginning at 8:30 a.m. Jay Heaps, Mass Youth Soccer alumni, and other players from the New England Revolution will be on hand to conduct clinics and sign autographs throughout the day. Team mascots from the Boston Bruins, Celtics, Worcester Sharks and the Boston Breakers, a new women’s professional soccer team, also will be on hand.
“Citizens Bank is committed to the communities it serves,” said Robert E. Smyth, president, Citizens Bank, Massachusetts. “We are proud to sponsor this best-in-class youth soccer facility as part of our continuing support of youth soccer and long-standing partnership with Mass Youth Soccer.”
“Soccer is one of the most popular youth sports in the state and it keeps growing,” said John Burrill, executive director of Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association. “Citizens Bank has been a good friend and supporter of Mass Youth Soccer. We want to thank Citizens and the late George K. Progin of Lancaster for funding this project and sharing our commitment to supporting young people in our communities.”
As part of the celebration, Jewel James, director of public affairs at Citizens Bank, Massachusetts and Burrill will join U.S. Youth Soccer representatives and local Lancaster officials for a presentation and awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at the pavilion located at the entrance from Route 70.
Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park will serve as a destination for families in the state as well as throughout New England and the country. Mass Youth Soccer estimates that a single large tournament will generate more than $1.6 million for the local economy, as families who travel to Lancaster for multiple-day tournaments will spend money on hotels, restaurants and entertainment.
“Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park will inject millions into the local economy,” said Smyth. “To that end, our sponsorship of the state-of-the-art facility is as much an investment in the community as it is in youth soccer.”
The soccer complex is located at 512 Old Union Turnpike in Lancaster. For directions, visit mayouthsoccer.org.
