CADE named Champion in Action in Philadelphia for its work in violence prevention
Organization receives $25,000 grant and other benefitsPHILADELPHIA (October 12, 2007) - Four of the region’s foremost corporate leaders announced today that CADE (the Corporate Alliance for Drug Education) has been named greater Philadelphia’s latest Champion in Action® in recognition of its work with children on violence prevention. Each year, CADE’s specialists work with more than 35,000 kindergarten through 8th grade students, teaching them how they can resolve issues and conflicts without resorting to violence. As a Champion in Action, over the next three months, CADE will receive a $25,000 grant, media coverage, and extensive promotional and volunteer support.
Champions in Action is an innovative program that provides various forms of support for small non-profit organizations in recognition of their contributions to communities throughout the five-county Philadelphia area. Since its inception in 2003, including today’s announcement, 15 Champions have been selected.
“Citizens Bank is pleased to join NBC 10, Greater Philadelphia Cares, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News in naming CADE as our new Champion in Action,” said Pamela A. Crawley, Senior Vice President and Director of Public Affairs for Citizens Bank. “CADE teaches children to reject violence and substance abuse by helping them to identify positive alternatives to harmful situations they may encounter in their homes, schools or neighborhoods. CADE’s services are especially effective because its prevention specialists form mentoring relationships with students rather than simply conducting ‘one shot’ programs.”
“NBC 10 is proud to be a partner with the Champions in Action program,” said Dennis Bianchi, President and General Manager of NBC 10. “Strong partnerships and programs such as this allow us to demonstrate our community commitment, and give us the chance to thank local nonprofits, such as CADE, that do so much good work in communities across our region. Each year, by touching the lives of so many young people, CADE is able to have a powerful and lasting impact that is helping children make smart choices in the face of conflict.”
“With only a small staff and an annual budget of less than $1 million, CADE is providing violence prevention programming to schools in Philadelphia, Norristown, Camden and Winslow Township, NJ as well as at three Police Athletic League after-school centers,” said Carol Dooling, Director of Communications and Partnerships at The Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com. “CADE’s programs have increased student attendance rates at school, improved grades and created healthy attitudes against drug use which is often tied to the violence that students increasingly face.”
“Volunteer support can be helpful to an organization such as CADE,” said Renee Archawski, Interim Executive Director of Greater Philadelphia Cares. “We are delighted to pledge our support to the agency, especially in helping expand its Career Day series for elementary and middle school students.”
CADE Executive Director Ellie H. Boyarski and several members of her staff and board of directors were part of the studio audience during today’s live broadcast of the 10! Show. Much to their surprise and delight, during a special segment on violence prevention, they learned that CADE had been selected as a Champion in Action and will receive:
• A $25,000 contribution in unrestricted funds from the Citizens Bank Foundation.
• Media coverage from NBC 10, including public service announcements and profiles.
• Advertising space in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and on Philly.com to promote both the program and the organization.
• Volunteer support from Citizens Bank, NBC 10 and Greater Philadelphia Cares.
• Extensive public relations support.
• Promotional support, highlighting the Champion in Action in all Citizens Bank branches.
• Exposure on the Web sites of Citizens Bank, NBC 10 and Philly.com.
• Consulting and implementation services, provided by Greater Philadelphia Cares, to leverage volunteer support that enhances impact.

During the school day, after-school and through summer programs, CADE offers children a place to turn for honest answers to difficult questions. Kids learn they can count on the guidance of a trusted adult, the CADE Prevention Specialist, to help them make better choices. Teachers, parents and community leaders count on CADE for reliable information, ideas for solving problems and guidance. CADE helps concerned adults work together with children to cope with and avoid the devastating impact of substance abuse and violence in their lives. CADE’s Web site is www.cadekids.org.
