Citizens Bank names The Center for Women and Families as Champion In Action

Agency receives $25,000 grant, volunteer and promotional support

HARTFORD, CONN.          (October 24, 2007) - Citizens Bank, Connecticut and WTNH, News Channel 8 of New Haven today announced that The Center for Women and Families of Bridgeport, an organization dedicated to strengthening women and families and eliminating violence and abuse, has been name its Champion in Action® for the fourth quarter of 2007 in the area of violence prevention.

The award was announced by Michael Steele of RBS Card Services and Jon Hitchcock of News Channel 8 during an on-air segment during the noon newscast on WTNH earlier today. The award includes a $25,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation.

”Since 1896, the Center for Women and Families has provided a safe haven for women and children who are impacted by domestic violence,” said Rich Barry, President, Citizens Bank, Connecticut. “It is our sincere hope that by honoring the center as our Champion in Action, this important work will continue for as long as it is needed.”

The Center for Women and Families provides comprehensive services addressing issues resulting from the impact domestic violence and sexual assault. CWF is the primary resource for victims of abuse in eastern Fairfield County's six towns of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull. Last year, the agency provided critical services to more than 4,500 children and adults, with more than 10,000 participating in CWF's community education and awareness training.

Champions in Action is a partnership between Citizens Bank and WTNH launched in 2002 to provide financial support and public awareness to the nonprofit organizations that work every day to champion change in our communities.

Each quarter, a non-profit organization among a range of social service topics in Connecticut is recognized as a Champion in Action. Each champion in action receives the following support in addition to the $25,000 grant from the Citizens Bank Foundation:

  • Media coverage from News Channel 8, including public service announcements;
  • Volunteer support from both Citizens Bank and News Channel 8;
  • Public relations support; and promotional support through visibility at Citizen Bank branches and citizensbank.com.
