The Institute for the Study and Practice for Nonviolence named Champion in Action in violence prevention category

Nonprofit agency receives unrestricted $25,000 grant, PR and volunteer support

PROVIDENCE, R.I.          (October 3, 2007) - Citizens Bank, Rhode Island and NBC10 today named The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence located in Providence, as its 2007 fourth quarter Champion in Action® in the violence prevention category. As part of the award, ISPN will receive a $25,000 grant, media coverage and extensive promotional and volunteer support for its outstanding work.

ISPN's mission is to teach by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence, ultimately resulting in nonviolent resolutions. In 2003, intervention and prevention education was dramatically enhanced when the Nonviolence Streetworkers Outreach Program was created.

“Citizens Bank is pleased to name ISPN as the newest Champion in Action in the violence prevention category,” said Joseph J. MarcAurele, President of Citizens Bank, Rhode Island. “ISPN has established itself as the premiere community-based organization in Rhode Island for all gang-related intervention and conflict resolution services.”

“ISPN is an inspiration and a great asset to our community for all perseverance in working to create a non-violent environment for Rhode Islanders. NBC 10 is proud to name ISPN as a Champion in Action in the violence prevention category.” Lisa Churchville, President and General Manager of NBC10.

Champions in Action is a joint initiative of Citizens Bank and NBC10, launched in July 2002, to recognize and support nonprofit organizations for their contributions to Rhode Island communities. A new Champion in Action is selected each quarter among a range of social service topics.

Prior Rhode Island Champions in Action to date include: Bayside Family Healthcare in North Kingstown; the House of Hope in Warwick; The Providence Black Repertory Company in Providence; the Woonsocket Neighborhood Development Corporation in Woonsocket; McAuley House in Providence; TechACCESS in Warwick; Sojourner House in Providence; Pawtucket Citizens Development Corporation in Pawtucket; Rhode Island Free Clinic in Providence; The Genesis Center in Providence; the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown; New Urban Arts in Providence; West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation in Providence; Tides Family Services located throughout the state; Community MusicWorks in Providence; the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport, Welcome House of South County in South Kingstown's Peace Dale neighborhood; Franklin Court Independent Living in Bristol; RiverzEdge Arts Project in Woonsocket; and Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council in Providence.

A winner for the first quarter 2008 Champion in Action in the Affordable Housing category will be announced in early January 2008. Applications for all 2008 topics can be obtained online at citizensbank.com/community.

ISPN is being recognized for:

  • Helping lower violent crimes in Providence by 50 percent, particularly youth violence.
  • Providing training and personal mentoring for inner-city teenagers during the most dangerous summer months.
  • Partnering with more than 35 employers to provide jobs and training for nearly 200 high school students.
  • Successfully training 2,500 children to pursue nonviolence practices.

As a Champion in Action, ISPN will receive:

  • A $25,000 contribution in unrestricted funds from Citizens Bank.
  • Media coverage from NBC10, including public service announcements and television profiles.
  • Volunteer support from Citizens and NBC10 employees.
  • Extensive public relations support.
  • Promotional support, highlighting the “Champion in Action” in all Citizens Bank branches and on its ATMs.
  • Exposure on both Citizens Bank and NBC10 Web sites.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a Champion in Action,” said Teny Gross, Executive Director of ISPN. “This partnership will allow us to further the study and practice of nonviolence amongst youth in Rhode Island.”
