Citizens Bank Foundation announces $10,000 grant to Island Moving Company in Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 2, 2007) - The Citizens Bank Foundation recently announced a $10,000 grant to underwrite several scholarships to the Island Moving Company, Newport’s Resident Dance Company.
This grant also will help children of the Martin Luther King Center take dance classes at the Newport Academy of Ballet.
“It is great to have Citizens’ support for a second year of our program with Aquidneck Island’s third graders,” said Michael Bolger, Director of Education Programs at the Island Moving Company. “We can build on our relationships in the Island’s schools to make the creative movement a real part of the school community. And our students from the Martin Luther King Center can count on another year of dance training at our studio. They’re doing great work and we look forward to bringing more kids into class as we expand our scholarship program. Kids learn in many different ways and it’s great to see them connect with the expressive power of dance. We love getting kids moving!”
Last spring, Bolger worked with all public elementary school on Aquidneck Island to schedule creative movement classes for the third graders. This spring, the classes continue and third graders will participate in three classes with the Island Moving Co. dancers, exploring the choreographic principles of rhythm, level, tempo and pattern, taking inspiration from what they are studying, from poems and pieces of text, and from their own imaginations.
Island Moving Company is a non-profit, classically-trained, contemporary ballet company, founded on the belief that collaboration and a supportive environment enhance the creative process, producing great works of art representing profound expressions of the human spirit and experience.
