Citizens Bank donates “Stockings of Love” to Philadelphia area homeless shelters

More than 2,000 stockings donated by bank employees

PHILADELPHIA  (December 18, 2007) - Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania announced today that it is donating more than 2,000 “Stockings of Love” to assist homeless people living in temporary shelters and transition housing. The stockings are filled with goodies, particularly toiletry items and hats and gloves, donated by Citizens Bank employees. The stockings are being distributed to homeless shelters and service agencies throughout greater Philadelphia.

“Our branch managers wanted to make a community impact at the grassroots level during the holidays,” said Peg Marty, Executive Vice President, Retail Banking at Citizens Bank. “Our colleagues asked that we again conduct our Stockings of Love program because they have seen how it brings warmth and good cheer to members of our community who are most in need.”

As part of the donation, employees delivered 500 stockings to the People’s Emergency Center in Philadelphia today. The stockings are filled with items that are appropriate for a man, woman, boy or girl. In some instances, bank colleagues also donated new coats for children and handmade crocheted scarves and other items.

“We are grateful to Citizens Bank and its employees for generously donating badly needed supplies to our most vulnerable residents,” said Gloria Guard, President of the People’s Emergency Center. “The holidays can be a difficult time of year so we rely heavily on community support.”

Over the years, Citizens Bank’s “Stockings of Love” program has delivered items to thousands of homeless people in temporary shelters. The red mesh stockings are filled with items such as scarves, knit hats, gloves, and socks, and trial size toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, shampoo, combs, brushes, barrettes, washcloths and soap. Shelters have indicated that these are the items they need most.

“Our colleagues dedicate a lot of  time throughout the year to help out in their communities, but during this time of year they truly feel the spirit of the season and relish the opportunity to thoughtfully select items that will help a family or someone in need enjoy the holidays,“ said Marty.
