Martin Luther King Jr. Day declared free day at Carnegie Science Center on North Shore
Free admission, free parking on January 21 underwritten by Citizens Bank FoundationPITTSBURGH (January 14, 2008) - The Citizens Charitable Foundation announced today that it has partnered with the Carnegie Science Center to provide free admission and parking on Monday, January 21 for “Not Your Typical Day at Carnegie Science Center” on the North Shore.
“Dr. Martin Luther King dedicated his life to freedom of expression for all people,” said Ralph J. Papa, chairman of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania. “The Citizens Bank Foundation is proud to treat our community to free admission and parking at Carnegie Science Center, where freedom of expression is celebrated every day. When you see children and adults excited by the hands-on exhibits and expand their science, it really makes you appreciate how fortunate we are to have this wonderful resource for Pittsburgh.”
“The Citizens Bank Foundation is most generous to underwrite a free community day at Carnegie Science Center of Pittsburgh,” said David M. Hillenbrand, president of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. “We are especially pleased that we can offer children and families off from work and school an enjoyable and edifying way to spend the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday together. This free day gives everyone the opportunity to come and discover the many gems within our museums and explore the many hands-on experiences at the Science Center.”
In addition to the Science Center’s four floors of hands-on exhibits and live theater shows, we will be featuring two films in the Rangos Omnimax Theater on MLK Day: Coral Reef, which is a stunning underwater journey that features both healthy and dying coral reefs, and Everest, a dramatic true story that takes audiences across creaking icefalls and gaping chasms, up dangerous, towering cliffs, through a harrowing rescue and into the danger zone of oxygen-thin altitude.
Our new high-def Buhl Digital Dome will feature the program Follow the Drinking Gourd, which tells the story of the song used by southern slaves to help them follow the pathway north to freedom. This song used cues from nature and the sky to lead them on their way along the Underground Railroad. The show is adapted from the children’s book of the same name by author and illustrator Jeanette Winter.
Regular Monday museum hours of 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. will apply on January 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Free parking is available in the museum’s parking lot, compliments of the Citizens Charitable Foundation.
For families interested in spending additional quality time together at all four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, special membership fees have been arranged during Martin Luther King Day. A Family membership can be purchased for $115 (a savings of $15), which admits two adults, a designated caregiver, and up to four children to Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The Andy Warhol Museum and Carnegie Science Center, plus hundreds of other partnering science centers across the United States.
