The Career Wardrobe named Champion in Action in Philadelphia

Organization receives $25,000 grant and other benefits

PHILADELPHIA     (April 23, 2008) - Four of the region’s foremost corporate leaders announced today that The Career Wardrobe is the latest nonprofit to be named a Champion in Action®. The Career Wardrobe received the Champion in Action recognition because of its effectiveness in furthering workforce development among low-income women. Since 1995, The Career Wardrobe has helped more than 50,000 women fulfill their dreams of entering and remaining in the workforce. As a Champion in Action, The Career Wardrobe will receive a $25,000 grant, media coverage, and extensive promotional and volunteer support over the next three months.

Champions in Action is an innovative program that provides various forms of support for small nonprofit organizations in recognition of their contributions to communities throughout the five-county Philadelphia area. Since its inception in 2003, including today’s announcement, 17 Champions have been selected.

“Citizens Bank is pleased to join NBC 10, Greater Philadelphia Cares, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News and Philly.com in naming The Career Wardrobe as our new Champion in Action,” said Pamela Browner-Crawley, Citizens Bank Senior Vice President and Director of Public Affairs. “Applying for a job can be very stressful and first impressions, which often include how an applicant is dressed, can be decisive. Each year The Career Wardrobe boosts the confidence of thousands of women by providing them with a professional outfit and supporting them through every phase of the employment process so that they have the necessary skills to get and keep a job.”

“NBC 10 is proud to be a partner with the Champions in Action program,” said Dennis Bianchi, President and General Manager of NBC 10. “Strong partnerships and programs such as this allow us to demonstrate our community commitment, and give us the chance to thank local nonprofits, such as The Career Wardrobe, that do so much good work in communities across our region. The Career Wardrobe has a significant track record of success in helping women to achieve self-sufficiency.”

“The Career Wardrobe’s effective work includes a series of workshops that teach women soft skills, resume review sessions and how to build a career wardrobe within a budget,” said Carol Dooling, Director of Communications and Partnerships at The Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and philly.com. “Its success can also be measured by its partnerships with more than 100 job training programs, domestic violence shelters and other social service agencies throughout the five-county Philadelphia region.”

“Volunteer support can be helpful to an organization such as The Career Wardrobe,” said Renee Archawski, Executive Director of Greater Philadelphia Cares. “We are delighted to pledge our support to help The Career Wardrobe through a variety of volunteer projects such as sorting donated clothing or recruiting volunteers to conduct practice interviews for jobs.”

The Career Wardrobe Executive Director Sheri K. Cole was participating in a special dress to impress segment of the 10! Show when she and members of her staff  who were part of the studio audience learned that The Career Wardrobe had been selected as a Champion in Action and will receive:

• A $25,000 contribution in unrestricted funds from the Citizens Bank Foundation.
• Media coverage from NBC 10, including public service announcements and profiles.
• Advertising space in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and on Philly.com to promote both the program and the organization.
• Volunteer support from Citizens Bank, NBC 10 and Greater Philadelphia Cares.
• Extensive public relations support.
• Promotional support, highlighting the Champion in Action in all Citizens Bank branches.
• Exposure on the Web sites of Citizens Bank, NBC 10 and Philly.com.
• Consulting and implementation services, provided by Greater Philadelphia Cares, to leverage volunteer support that enhances impact.

Two more Champions in Action are still to be selected and announced this year. In July, a Champion that delivers effective Youth Programming services will be announced. The fourth and final 2008 Champion in Action will be recognized for work in the area of Community Health Care and will be selected from applications received by July 18, 2008.
