Citizens Bank Foundation in Pittsburgh gives $50,000 grant to Dollar Energy Fund
PITTSBURGH (February 12, 2009) - The Citizens Bank Foundation today announced that it has contributed $50,000 to Dollar Energy Fund as part of Citizens Financial Group’s Energy$ense initiative. Since 1983, Dollar Energy Fund has worked with utility companies to improve the quality of life for households experiencing hardships, by providing utility assistance and other services that lead to self-sufficiency. The Citizens contribution will be matched dollar for dollar by participating utility companies to help individuals and families pay for basic utility services.
Energy$ense is a multi-faceted initiative to help local nonprofits and Citizens Bank and Charter One customers address heat, utility and other energy costs. As part of the program, Citizens is providing more than $500,000 in energy assistance grants to nonprofit organizations that offer home weatherization and utility payment assistance to consumers. Through its Citizens Bank and Charter One divisions, the company also is providing below market-rate loans to eligible consumers who want to make their homes more energy efficient and save on utility costs, with a limited-time option to defer their first payment for 90 days.
“Citizens Bank is committed to making a real and lasting difference in the communities we serve,” said Ralph J. Papa, Chairman of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania. “We are all affected by the increasing costs of everyday living expenses, but for some of our neighbors these increasing costs may mean the difference between heating and eating. Dollar Energy Fund does a terrific job of helping these folks through a difficult time.”
Citizens is also making special information available in the branches to help consumers become more educated about energy use, including energy-saving tips that will enable them to use energy smarter and reduce costs.
“I want to thank Citizens Bank for its generous donation that will help families and individuals in the community to endure and overcome the burden of utility costs this winter,” said Cindy Datig, Executive Director of Dollar Energy Fund. “There are more families than ever that need help this winter, and it’s important that we come together as a community to assist them.”
