Frequently asked questions about escheatment and dormant accounts

You may have been issued a check that was never cashed. After a dormancy period, the issuer is legally required to report and transfer the funds to the state.

A Citizens account is considered dormant when there has been no transaction activity for a specified period. To avoid your account becoming dormant, make sure to perform at least one transaction within the designated timeframe.

  • Maintenance Fees: Dormant accounts may be subject to monthly maintenance fees.
  • Reactivation: Reactivate your account by performing a transaction or contacting our customer service.

If your account remains inactive for an extended period, it may be considered abandoned and subject to escheatment. This means the assets in the account will be transferred to the state.

Steps to avoid escheatment:

  • Notification: Citizens will send due diligence letters prior to escheatment, informing you of the impending transfer.
  • Action Required: Follow the instructions on the letter to claim your funds before they are escheated to the state.
