We have an established track record of deep credibility and broad expertise with more than 40 years in the student loan business. Over that time, we've developed a network of close relationships with college financial aid offices and other student financial aid professionals, which greatly benefits our borrowers.

Our eligibility requirements are:

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents. International students can apply with a creditworthy U.S. citizen or permanent resident cosigner
  • The student must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree-granting program at an eligible institution. Half-time enrollment is typically 6-8 credit hours per semester and varies by school. Please consult your school's financial aid office for details.
  • Have good credit or have a qualified cosigner
  • Have attained the age of majority in your state of residence or if you have not met the age of majority in your state of residence, a cosigner will be required
  • Have no prior student loan defaults

You may borrow up to the maximum qualified loan amount or the total cost of education, whichever is lower. Our student loan does have lifetime aggregate limits (including both federal and private loan debt) of:

Minimum: $1,000

MBA and Law: $300,000

The Citizens Student Loan™ and Citizens Student Loan™ for Parents have no origination, application, or disbursement fees. And there is no prepayment penalty or any other penalty for paying more than the minimum monthly payment or for paying off the entire loan early.
