Frequently Asked Questions

Dental school student loans are a type of private student loan designed for students enrolled in an eligible dental school program. At Citizens, these loans are school‑certified and can be used to cover eligible education‑related expenses included in your school’s cost of attendance, such as tuition, required fees, housing, books, and other approved expenses.

For dental school, you can typically borrow from $1,000 up to 100% of your school's certified cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid you receive. Certified costs may include tuition and fees, housing, books, supplies, transportation, and required technology.

Yes. Dental school loans can be used for required equipment and supplies as long as those costs are included in your school's certified cost of attendance. This may include items such as clinical instruments, kits, uniforms, and other required supplies.

After dental school, borrowers can choose from three repayment options for their student loans: immediate repayment, where you pay principal and interest while in school; interest‑only repayment, where you pay interest during school and begin full payments after graduation; or deferred repayment, where payments begin after graduation. With interest‑only or deferred repayment, full principal and interest payments usually start six months after you graduate, leave school, or drop below half‑time enrollment. During deferred repayment, interest continues to accrue and is added to the principal when repayment begins.

A fixed interest rate stays the same for the life of the loan, so your interest rate and monthly payment remain consistent. A variable interest rate can change over time based on a market index (i.e. SOFR), which means your rate and monthly payment may increase or decrease over the loan term.

The application can be completed online or by phone in just a few minutes. After the loan is processed and approved, your school must certify the loan for the correct amount before funds can be disbursed. The whole process can take several business days.
