An overdraft occurs when you don't have enough money available in your account to cover a transaction. Fees often apply when a transaction causes an account to become overdrawn.

Consumer Credit Counseling
If you need additional help managing your finances, consider consulting a credit counseling agency. Refer to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) "Choosing a Credit Counselor" document, which includes a list of government-approved credit counseling agencies that provide low-cost credit counseling services.
You've spent more money than you have available in your account. A transaction that exceeds your Available Balance will cause your account to become overdrawn and a $35 overdraft fee† will apply. Citizens may choose to pay this transaction (at our discretion).

For additional overdraft protection Citizens offers two types of plan options on all of our personal checking accounts. For those who occasionally overdraw their account our Savings Overdraft Transfer and Overdraft Line of Credit Plans may provide a less expensive alternative to paying overdraft fees.

How it works |
When a transaction overdraws your account, an automatic transfer of available funds from your savings account will be made to cover the transaction. |
Transactions that overdraw your account will be paid at the end of the day via a single transfer using available funds from a line of credit attached to your checking account. |

The best way to avoid overdrafts and fees is to monitor your account balances and activity. Here are some tools that make it easy:
Set up Online Banking email and text alerts† to be notified when your balance is low, and to monitor specific transactions.
Log in to Online and Mobile Banking† daily to securely check your available balance and account activity. Remember to consider any outstanding checks or scheduled payments that have not been made.
You can set up bill payments when you know you have money in your account (like on payday) and set reminders to ensure you won't pay your bills late and incur costly fees.
Have your paycheck automatically deposited in your account to get faster access to funds on payday and ensure your money is available when you need it.
Now with Citizens Paid Early®. A new feature that lets you get paid sooner — up to 2 days early.†
Citizens has checking accounts designed specifically for those wanting to prevent overdraft fees. Compare Checking Account Options
Direct deposits will initially display on the My Accounts page of Online Banking when they come in to your account during the day. That evening, once the transaction is posted to your account the name is updated to show the respective payer of the transaction (for example: Acme Co. Payroll).
If your account becomes overdrawn, you should deposit money into your account as soon as possible. With Citizens Peace of Mind®, if your account is overdrawn and you deposit enough funds to bring your account to a positive available balance (minus overdraft fees) by 10:00 PM ET the following business day, overdraft fees will be reversed. Citizens Peace of Mind works when you have a positive available balance. A deposit of cash, a Citizens check, or an electronic funds transfer will generally be available to cover the transactions that same day. However, some deposits such as checks drawn on a bank other than Citizens, even if made by 10:00 PM ET the following business day, are not available to cover transactions that day. Our Funds Availability schedule helps you determine when a deposit you make will increase your available balance. Once you have overdrawn your account, bring it to a positive balance as soon as possible to avoid additional fees. Learn more about Citizens Peace of Mind®.
Overdraft Fees apply if you overdraw your account, don't have the necessary Available Balance at the end of the day and we pay the transaction on your behalf. You will be charged an Overdraft Fee for each item paid.
Overdraft Fee:
$35 per item paid
We will limit to 5 the number of Overdraft Fees charged on any one day, up to a total of $175. Once you have overdrawn your account, you must bring it to a positive balance as soon as possible.
You can enroll or un-enroll in Debit Card Overdraft Coverage at any time over the phone by calling 1-800-922-9999, through Online and Mobile Banking, or at your local branch. Your decision is effective immediately once recorded. What you need to know about overdrafts and overdraft fees.
There is no fee for Savings Overdraft Transfer Plan.
For our Overdraft Line of Credit Plan, there is a $30 Annual Fee plus a $12 Transfer Fee each day a transfer occurs. There is no transfer fee on any day in which all overdraft transactions are $5 or less or the overdraft plan transfer is $5 or less - $5 Overdraft Pass®†. The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for an Overdraft Line of Credit is 21% on the outstanding loan balance.
These annual and transfer fees do not apply to Student, Citizens EverValue Checking™, Citizens Quest®, Citizens Private Client™ Checking and Citizens Private Bank™ Checking accounts.
Our Student Checking and Citizens EverValue Checking accounts do not come with standard overdraft coverage. So, if you don't have sufficient available funds in your account to cover a transaction, it will be declined and, in the case of checks, bill payments and ACH transactions, the item will be returned unpaid. As a result, $5 Overdraft Pass® does not apply and are not eligible for Debit Card Overdraft Coverage enrollment.
While Student and Citizens EverValue Checking is designed to prevent overdrafts, there may be times when your account could have a negative balance. This could happen if a purchase you make is approved for one amount, but the final charge is more than your available balance. If a transaction results in a negative balance on your account, we will not charge you an Overdraft Fee.
Student and Citizens EverValue Checking customers can set up an Overdraft Plan from a Savings account or Line of Credit to help you cover transactions when they don't have sufficient available funds. Both plans are available with no fee on these accounts. Credit approval is required and finance charges apply.
